Launching soon in Bulgaria

Google Shopping is coming to Bulgaria. Here is what to do before it lands.

Bulgaria sits in the second phase of a 15-market European rollout, scheduled for the holiday season. The stores that show up on day one will be the ones whose product feed is already clean. That work takes weeks, not days.

For years, Bulgarian online stores have watched Google Shopping work everywhere else. You search for a mattress in Germany and you get a row of products with photos, prices and shop names above the results. Search the same in Bulgaria and you get ten blue links.

That is changing. Google is expanding Shopping ads into 15 new European markets, and Bulgaria is on the list. The rollout runs in two phases, and Bulgaria falls into the second one, timed for the holiday season.

The same search, two countries. Shopping puts the product, the price and the shop above the results. That is what arrives in Bulgaria.

Worth being precise about
Google has not published a fixed public date for Bulgaria. Multiple agencies tracking the rollout place it in the holiday-season phase, and every one of them notes the timeline can move. Treat this as a planning target, not a promise. We keep a status page updated as things firm up.

What actually changes

Shopping ads are the product listings that appear at the top of search results with an image, a price and your shop name. They are not text ads. The customer sees the product before they ever click, which changes who clicks: fewer visitors, but far better qualified ones, because price and appearance have already done the filtering.

Two things follow from that. First, whoever has the cleanest product data wins, because Google matches searches to your feed, not to keywords you have chosen. Second, the advantage goes to whoever is already there on day one. When a format launches in a market, competition for it is briefly close to zero.

Worth keeping the scale in mind: Bulgarian e-commerce is heading for roughly 3.5 billion EUR this year and growing north of 20% annually. A format like this landing in a market moving that fast, in the week retailers make their year, is not a minor scheduling note.

Phase 2Holiday season

Bulgaria lands in the second wave, at the highest-grossing retail moment of the year.

The holiday season is the highest-grossing retail period of the year. That is deliberate on Google's part, and it means the window to prepare is the next couple of months, not the week before.

What you need in place

None of this is exotic. It is just work that takes time, and most of it can be done now, before the format is live. The feed is the part that takes longest and fails most often, so it has its own detailed guide, including the euro-changeover trap.

  • A Google Merchant Center account, verified and with your website claimed. Bulgarian is supported as a language in the platform.
  • A product feed that Google can read. If you are on Shopify, WooCommerce or Magento, this comes from an app or extension rather than a spreadsheet you maintain by hand.
  • Shipping and returns configured inside Merchant Center, matching what your site actually says. Mismatches here are one of the most common causes of disapproval.
  • Tax and price consistency. The price in the feed must match the price on the landing page, including VAT. Google checks this automatically and it is unforgiving.
  • A working Google Ads account with conversion tracking already verified, so that when Shopping opens you are not debugging tracking at the same time.

The product feed is the whole game

With text ads you write the ad. With Shopping you do not. Google builds the listing from your feed, so the feed is your ad copy, your targeting and your quality score at once. These are the fields that decide whether you show up:

Memory foam mattress, 160x200
332,00 €
yourshop.bg
titleThe highest-leverage field. Front-load what people actually search: brand, then product type, then the attribute that separates it. A title ending in the size and material will out-match one that only names the model.
image_linkClean product on a plain background. No watermarks, no promotional text burned into the image. Hard rule, and it is enforced.
priceMust match the landing page exactly, VAT included. Refresh at least daily.
gtin / brandThe identifiers that tell Google your product is the same one other shops sell. Missing GTINs limit how often you show.
availabilityIn stock, out of stock, preorder. Wrong here means paying for clicks to a dead page.
google_product_categoryGoogle's taxonomy, alongside your own product_type. Both feed the matching.

Every part of the listing comes from a feed field. With Shopping you do not write the ad, you supply the data it is built from.

From our own client work
We already run Merchant Center for a Shopify store in Bulgarian furniture and bedding retail, alongside Google Ads and Meta Ads on a combined monthly budget. The feed work, the shipping configuration and the conversion tracking were all done before Shopping was even announced for this market. That store will be able to switch the format on rather than start building.

What actually gets feeds rejected

Having watched Merchant Center reject plenty of products, the same handful of problems come up again and again:

  1. Price mismatch. The feed says 149,00 EUR, the page says 159,00 EUR because a promotion ended overnight and the feed did not refresh. Automatic disapproval, and the most common one by a distance.
  2. Promotional text inside the image. A red "-20%" badge sitting in the product photo. Not allowed, and it catches almost everyone who repurposes creative from their Facebook ads.
  3. Missing or wrong GTIN. Usually absent. Occasionally someone has put the internal SKU in the GTIN field, which is worse, because it looks fine until Google tries to match it.
  4. Shipping not configured for the country you sell into, or configured in a way that contradicts what the site says at checkout.
  5. The landing page itself. Out of stock, 404, or something that falls apart on a phone. Google checks the destination, not just the feed.
  6. No visible returns policy or contact details. Merchant Center wants both on the site, and this one surprises people who have never had to think about it.

One more worth flagging for Bulgaria specifically: cash on delivery is still the leading payment method here. That does not block Shopping, but it does mean your checkout and returns policy need to be spelled out clearly on site, because Merchant Center reviews them.

Your plan for the next eight weeks

Now
Open and verify Merchant Center. Claim the website. This alone can take days if domain verification is awkward.
Weeks 1-2
Connect the feed from your platform. Get products flowing, even with errors. You cannot fix what you cannot see.
Weeks 2-4
Work the error list to zero. Titles, images, GTINs, shipping. This is the bulk of the work.
Weeks 4-6
Verify conversion tracking end to end, and confirm prices stay in sync when promotions run.
Before launch
Campaign structure and budget agreed, so the day the format opens you are switching it on, not starting. What to actually launch is covered here.
The stores that win the first month will not be the ones with the biggest budgets. They will be the ones whose feed was already clean when the format opened.

Questions

They do different jobs. Search ads answer intent expressed in words, Shopping answers it with the product itself, and for e-commerce Shopping usually carries a lower cost per acquisition once the feed is healthy. The bigger point is that they run together: Shopping captures the product searches while Search covers everything around them.

Yes, and you should. Account verification, website claiming and feed cleanup are all available now and none of them depend on Shopping ads being live in the market. That is exactly why the preparation window matters.

It depends on your catalogue and category, and anyone quoting a universal number is guessing. What is predictable is that Shopping bids on products rather than keywords, so a broad catalogue with a clean feed can start smaller and scale into what works, rather than needing a large budget to gather data.

That is the easiest starting point. Shopify connects to Merchant Center through the Google channel app and syncs the catalogue automatically. The work moves from building a feed to correcting the data it sends, which is where titles, images and GTINs come in.

No. Google has confirmed the 15-market expansion and the two-phase structure, with Bulgaria in the holiday-season phase, but has not published a fixed public date. Every source tracking it notes the timeline can shift, which is why we keep a status page rather than committing to a day.
